Seeing Eye to Eye?
You are no better than anyone else and no one else is any better than you! Sounds harsh doesn’t it? I thought so at first but upon reflection if put into practice this mantra enables you to treat everyone as you would like to be treated. When someone is derogatory to you, pause to think how shallow that is and be able to defend against the inadequacy they are trying to make you feel. People often have to make others feel inferior to avoid looking at their own insecurities and feelings of inadequacy. An example – Bill and Ben (not their real names) aged 10… Bill teased Ben about his father being fat; this hurt Ben and caused him distress. The reason Bill was being so cruel is that Ben has a happy family; his father loves him and gets involved in his school life. Bill’s family has split up and he does not see his dad so much. Bill is jealous of Ben’s happiness and trying to make himself feel better by looking for faults in others. When Ben understood why Bill was being so cruel he no longer wished his dad looked different and instead felt pity for Bill. As the teasing came from envy not ridicule, Ben gained the inner strength through understanding to fend off the insults and see them for what they were rather than take them at face value.
